The Power of Personal Connection: A Conversation with Trip Leader Issam Gharib

At GeoEx we know from decades of experience that a trip leader can make all the difference on a trip, offering life-changing insights, authentic experiences, and personal connections that can make a journey truly life-changing. We are thrilled that veteran guide Issam Gharib will be leading GeoEx’s Road to Baghdad: Exploring Southern Iraq trips in 2026 and 2027. I recently spoke with Issam about his background, philosophy, and defining experiences as a traveler and trip leader. Here is our conversation.

I’d like to begin by asking you to briefly describe your background.

I was born and educated in Amman, Jordan. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in English Language and studied Graphic Design as well. Since 2010, I have been working as a licensed tour guide and tour leader with leading international travel agencies in Jordan, Egypt, and more recently Iraq.

Guiding is not just my profession — it is a passion. I am deeply curious about cultures, history, and human stories, and I truly enjoy connecting travelers to the places they visit in meaningful ways.

How did you get started as a tour expert/leader?

During my final year at university, I volunteered to escort UN agency staff visiting Jordan. That experience opened my eyes to the power of cultural exchange. I realized that I enjoyed not only sharing my country, but also learning from visitors.

After graduation, I enrolled in the Ministry of Tourism’s official tour guide certification program and obtained my guiding license. From that point on, I committed fully to building my career as a professional tour leader.

Where have you led tours?

I have led tours throughout Jordan and Egypt for many years, and more recently in Iraq, including southern Iraq and Baghdad. Each destination has its own rhythm and personality, and I value adapting my leadership style to the cultural and logistical realities of each place.

What do you love about this work?

I love the variety and the human connection. No two days are the same. I appreciate not being tied to an office routine and instead being outdoors, in historic cities, deserts, archaeological sites, and vibrant markets. Most importantly, I enjoy meeting people from around the world and building genuine connections that often turn into long-term friendships.

What do you love about the region or regions where you’ll be leading GeoEx travelers?

The Middle East is layered, complex, and deeply human. What I love most is the richness of culture — the ancient civilizations, religious heritage, literature, architecture, and traditions that are still alive today.

But beyond history, it is the hospitality of the people that leaves the strongest impression on travelers. The warmth, generosity, and pride locals show when welcoming visitors often become the most memorable part of the journey.

Please give one example of a really great experience you’ve had as a tour leader that exemplifies the importance of your role.

While leading a group in Najaf, Iraq, one of our travelers connected with a local woman at the Imam Ali Shrine. Their conversation was simple but genuine, and the woman warmly invited her to visit her family’s tent in the nearby desert.

After carefully assessing the situation, I accompanied them. We were welcomed with tea and heartfelt hospitality. The traveler later told me it was the most meaningful moment of her journey because it felt personal and authentic.

For me, this experience reflects the importance of my role — creating safe opportunities for real cultural connection while ensuring comfort and trust.

Please tell us anything else you’d like us to know about you.

In addition to my work in travel, my wife and I founded a Dead Sea skincare brand in Jordan, which now operates two showrooms. Building this business from the ground up has strengthened my skills in leadership, organization, branding, and client relations.

Balancing entrepreneurship with guiding has taught me adaptability, attention to detail, and long-term relationship building — qualities that I am excited to bring to every GeoEx departure.
