What to Expect
Begin in Islamabad, Pakistan, then continue to Kabul, Afghanistan’s historic capital and a gateway to the country’s diverse regions and traditions. Explore the rugged valleys surrounding the city, then travel west to Herat, where luminous minarets and Islamic architecture reflect the city’s long role as a center of art and learning. In Bamiyan, painted cave monasteries and vast cliffside niches preserve traces of a Buddhist world that once flourished along these highland routes. The journey concludes at Band-e-Amir National Park, where deep blue lakes glitter beneath dramatic limestone cliffs.

Days 1 – 2Preparations in Pakistan
Arrive in Pakistan and visit an Islamabad market to purchase scarves, abayas, and shalwar kameez for the journey ahead. At the Afghanistan Embassy, submit visa applications and receive documents in time for travel to Afghanistan.
Days 3 – 5Invitation to Afghanistan
Fly to Kabul. Explore the terraced gardens of hillside Bagh-e Babur, visit the National Museum of Afghanistan, and become acquainted with the neighborhoods of the capital city.

Hermann Kreutzmann
Anthropologist and geographer Hermann Kreutzmann has spent more than four decades traveling, conducting research, and leading fieldwork across Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bhutan, and Central Asia. Drawn early on to the cultures and landscapes of the Hindu Kush and Karakoram, he has developed relationships with local communities and fellow scholars throughout the region. Hermann’s firsthand experience, deep knowledge of local history and culture, and engaging style make him an insightful guide.
