The more you travel in it, the bigger the world gets. And it doesn’t get much bigger, grander, or more captivating than Namibia. You begin in unexpectedly charming, mile-high Windhoek, then fly to a fine wilderness camp at Sossusvlei, site of Namibia’s world record, 1000-foot dunes.

Now by charter flight to the Palmwag Reserve in Damaraland, a vast, rocky desert overseen by the gaunt and looming Brandeberg Mountains, for two days in search of the rare desert elephant and rhino. Then you wing your way to the fabled Skeleton Coast and revel in the vibrant wildlife that thrives at the junction of desert and ocean.

Finally, you plunge into the heart of Namibia’s inexhaustible grandeur with a couple of nights in what is surely southern Africa’s most remote camp, Serra Cafema, up in the country's extreme northwest. You spend time amid the breathtaking scenery of the Hartmann Valley on the watch for herds of springbok and ostrich, traverse sand dunes on four-wheel-drive safaris, and boat on the Kunene River.

For more exploring, add on our handy, two-day extension to Etosha National Park and neighboring Ongava, one of the few private reserves in Africa where chances are good of seeing both white and black rhino by vehicle and, carefully, on foot.
