Your journey begins in Moscow—the wellspring of so much of the world’s culture, history, and politics. One hundred and eighteen years, and two dynasties, have passed, but Lord Curzon’s praise still rings true: “the Oriental irregularity and bizarre beauty of Moscow, an Eastern exotic transplanted to the West, an inland Constantinople, a Christian Cairo.” But this trip will take you far beyond just one (albeit, magnificent) city.
To the northeast of Moscow lies the Golden Ring—a circle of ancient towns whose lifeblood forms the marrow of Old Russia. The charming onion-dome churches of Suzdal and Vladimir, jewels of the Golden Ring, are just two of the myriad wonders that encapsulate this part of Russia’s hold on the imagination. Then it’s northwest to St. Petersburg and its “silent, lonely beauty,” as Lillian Hellman put it. For an example of extravagance on an almost unimaginable level, you’ll also see Tsarskoye Selo, home of the Tsars, “the completest triumph of barbarous taste that I have seen,” harrumphed Sir N. W. Wraxall. All this, and many other discoveries, are certain to make this a most remarkable of adventures.
