Travel through peaceful Oman alongside a knowledgeable, GeoEx-vetted guide, unveiling the country's unforeseen mysteries. The enchanting starlet of Muscat is first, where you dive deeply into the history of the sultanate at the Bait Adam Museum (Bait al Zubair) and the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, and explore one of the best fish markets of the Arabian Peninsula.
On to the Arabian Sea, you pass through the old port town of Sur admiring centuries-old dhow-building techniques, then stroll through date plantations and past quaint fishing village oases. Traveling to the eastern-most tip of the country to the beaches of Ras al Jinz, you find graceful sea turtles, and at the right time of year, nesting mothers or hatching newborns.
Jaunting inland toward more arid landscapes, you can cool off in the blue pools of a wadi, preparing for an off-roading adventure in the walloping dunes of the Wahiba Sands, after which you spend a fairy- tale evening under the stars. Before returning to Muscat, there are excursions to the exhilarating Sinaw souk, the lively Nizwak cattle market, and the more languid, luscious villages of Jebel Akhdar (Green Mountain).
It’s either homeward from Muscat, or, better yet, extending your eye-opening journey north to the Musandam Peninsula or south to Salalah, a tropical paradise whose plantations and coconut-fringed beaches offer a flavor of Zanzibar in the heart of the Arabian desert.
