A mountain of booming personality and charm, Manaslu rises to 26,758 feet near the Tibetan border. We follow a spectacular trekking route through the Tsum Valley and around the massif—the planet’s eighth highest—for an absolutely unbeatable Himalayan experience: gorgeous, varied, and lonely (relatively few trekkers have yet discovered these hidden vales). Our trekking ace Vassi Koutsaftis says, “Manaslu is unquestionably Nepal’s finest trek, to my mind one of the world’s most classic and beautiful treks.”

We set off from warm, relatively low elevations and hike into the dramatic Budi Gandaki Gorge, climbing stone stairways and cliff-clinging trail, and crossing swinging bridges across raging torrents. We move through Hindu villages and sub-tropical forest alive with screeching birds and playful Hanuman langurs. Next we thoroughly explore the stunning Tsum Valley, a trade corridor between Nepalese lowlands and the high Tibetan plateau until China severed the link. With its unique culture and breathtaking scenery, this vale is one of Nepal’s best kept secrets (for now).

Then it's on to the high Nubri Valley, set on the north flank of Manaslu and less than a mile from Tibet in places. We pass its hamlets, yaks, and chorten, and are constantly dazzled by views of hanging glaciers and snowcapped peaks. The high point is 16,925-foot Larkya La, one of the most gob-stopping pass crossings in Nepal. Our trek wraps up in the Marsyangdi Valley, where tea houses and trappings of modern civilization are a welcome respite after weeks behind the Himalaya.

Short on time? We’ll happily orchestrate variations of this trek for you and your trekking cohorts—perhaps a shorter expedition into the Tsum Valley to Mu Gompa. Call 888-570-7108 for details.
