From town centers to hilltop paths and family homes, this imaginatively conceived journey celebrates the hospitality and traditions of Myanmar. Highlights include forays into less-frequented villages of Kengtung, where we meet Akha women donning striking headdresses and become acquainted with the animists of an An village. We also take an unusually deep look at the urban entry point of Yangon: its music, its temples, and an excellent encounter with the golden Shwedagon Pagoda just as the sun melts into the horizon.

After exploring Yangon and Kengtung, we linger on the waters of Inle Lake, gliding by long-tail boat, mesmerized by the floating gardens tended by the Inthas since time immemorial. We then away to Kakku Pagoda to discover its splendid sprawl of ruins. Continuing to the former British hill station of Kalaw, we stroll quiet lanes, browse markets, and ponder cheroot making. There's time dedicated to washing and feeding friendly elephants at a unique pachyderm-protecting camp.

Next to Bagan’s heavenly collection of thousand-year-old temples. Traveling up the Irrawaddy River to Pakkoku by private boat, we stop in at weaving and tobacco-trading shops, a monastery, and the Thiho-Shin Pagoda. By trip’s end, we celebrate our luck at being here in this rapidly changing country and feeling welcome by its people.
