“North or South?” That’s the question you’ll hear when announcing your upcoming trip to India. “Actually, the Central Province,” you can knowingly respond after booking our Inner India journey. This region of captivating contrasts rewards the more adventurous traveler.
You begin in Mumbai, an enigma of mud huts and skyscrapers, ancient tradition and high fashion. Then a quick flight to Aurangabad, your base to explore two World Heritage Sites: the Ajanta Caves, home to 600-years-in-the-making Buddhist masterpieces, and the Ellora Caves, 34 temples carved out of the Charanandri Hills. Now on to beautiful Maheshwar, a favorite of Bollywood location scouts. Based for three elegant nights in a 250-year-old fortress-cum-hotel above the Narmada River, you visit markets, temples, and a weaving center; take an evening boat cruise; and venture to the Afghan ruins at Mandu. And of course you spend time in the Madhya Pradesh capital of Bhopal, fascinating for history both ancient and recent. Next you’re off to Kanha National Park, known for its resident Royal Bengal tigers, before a rousing finale in Hyderabad. Here you stay at Falaknuma Palace, the ruling Nizam clan’s former residence and an ideal jumping-off-spot for touring the bustling city’s markets and museums.
