Located in the heart of the eastern Himalaya and bordered by Tibet, Nepal, and Bhutan, the Indian state of Sikkim is a visual feast of lushly forested mountain valleys, watery rice terraces, and Buddhist gompas. This 13-day adventure takes you from village to village, revealing this diverse region’s amazing views (some of the most breathtaking in India), arresting cultural beauty, warm people, and tranquil atmosphere.
You begin in Kolkata (Calcutta), known for its dramatic colonial architecture and Bengali cuisine. Then fly north, making your way to the mountain town of Gangtok, Sikkim’s capital. Awe-inspiring views of the magnificent white peaks of Kangchenjunga, the world’s third-highest mountain, are plentiful here. Between Gangtok and Darjeeling, you’ll walk forest paths lined with mosses, ferns, and orchids, and stay in small, hospitable family-run lodges and village homes. Your final three days in Sikkim are based from the lovely Glenburn Tea Estate, set high in the Himalaya on a hill above the Rungeet River. After 10 days of heart-pumping walks, eye-popping scenery, and visits to Buddhist temples and monasteries, you’ll come away feeling you’ve had a satisfying immersion into this serene, little-known culture.
