Colombia has a new press agent and she’s grabbing the microphone. Word is spreading that the majority of the country, in addition to being lushly gorgeous and culturally engaging, is entirely pacific. A time-suspended colonial backdrop diffuses the old-world-in-new-world charm we love, but now Colombia’s main cities are dilating into important progressive centers. Insider experiences abound: fancy yourself a foodie, for example, and we can arrange a private market tour with a local chef.

You’ll start out in Bogotá, falling for the architecture of old town Candelaria, then rising for city views atop Monserate. You may climb even higher for birding in the cloud forest just outside Bogotá, before taking to the car-free Sunday streets by foot or bike to absorb the burgeoning food and arts scene. Then fly west to the Zona Cafetera (coffee region) to sip the steaming brew and stay in authentic haciendas fringed by stunning Andean peaks. Wax palms expand around you as you hike the Valle del Cocora and Los Nevados National Parks. After jetting to Cartagena, you’ll roam San Felipe Castle and the walled old city, likely echoing with sounds of salsa. There are chocolate and rum tastings, along with opportunities to dine at private mansions before you cap this delicious trip with a sunset sail around Cartagena’s harbor.
