"What I love about Colombia is the energy this place emanates as it emerges from its turbulent past,” writes a GeoEx traveler, and it's a feeling that's contagious. One visit to South America's fourth-largest country is all it takes to put any preconceived notions behind you, for Colombia is a gem simply awaiting discovery. Not only is it home to some of Latin America's most progressive cities and passionate people, it's also one of world's most biodiverse nations, filled with tropical rain forests, rambling mountain ranges, multiple coasts, and nearly 2,000 bird species.
You begin in Bogotá, Colombia's cosmopolitan capital, wandering La Candelaria's historic streets, savoring bowls of ajiaco santafereño, and relishing the views from atop 10,341-foot Monserrate, the city's central peak. Then it's off to the country's cultural epicenter, the Coffee Triangle, a stunning region of verdant hillsides and rolling plantations. You'll learn about the java-making process, engage with local farmers, and hike among the bamboo forests and towering palms of Valle del Cocora National Park.
Next you fly to the Caribbean coastal city of Cartagena: exquisitely photogenic, richly diverse, and exuberantly spirited. After strolling its cobbled streets, you may test your skills at cooking traditional platos or spend the day snorkeling and beachcombing in the Rosario Islands. Cap off your adventure with a sunset sailboat cruise.
