Sara Barbieri

Senior Director, Product Development

Whether exploring the hinterlands of Myanmar or homestaying in northern Vietnam’s Ha Giang province, Sara is drawn to places and experiences that break down stereotypes. “When you meet a foreign culture one-on-one, preconceptions evolve into new awareness,” she explains, “and that’s part of what makes travel both mind-bending and exhilarating.”

Whether she’s designing journeys in such destinations as India and China, or leading GeoEx travelers in countries such as Pakistan, Sara thrives on finding small but potent ways to connect people to cultures and landscapes. It may be with hands-on home cooking in Chennai, walking along a hand-cut water channel in Karimabad (and chatting with locals along the way), or dining with a family in Srinagar. Sara urges you to stretch your concept of travel even it means waking up very early to boat to the floating vegetable market on Dal Lake or to volunteer at Amritsar’s Golden Temple, rolling out chapatis in the kitchen.

Sara revels in deeply immersing travelers in a place, and combines her on-the-ground knowledge and trip planning expertise to create remarkable experiences. Some that stand out for her: arranging dinner accompanied by local musicians in the remote Hunza Valley’s ancient Baltit Fort; lining up a private visit with a National Living Treasure potter in Bizen, Japan; and orchestrating a group in Xinjiang, China to witness the total solar eclipse.

“We’re fortunate to have taken a number of high-end trips with various companies, and while their representatives were excellent, Sara outclassed them all. She was very wonderful, attentive, caught every detail.” – Hester S.
