Discover one of the world’s least known nations

Dominated by the Karakum Desert (a breathtaking sight for those with a taste for vast barrenness), Turkmenistan’s history is one of conquest, re-conquest and the rise and fall of empires. Alexander the Great and Genghis Khan passed through, the long-lived Seljuk Empire arose here, and the Soviets dragooned it into their modern-day empire.  And, since the millennial Silk Road crossed it, Turkmenistan is home to fascinating archaeological sites, including the UNESCO World Heritage Site city of Merv, quite possibly the world’s most populous city in the 12th century.
