Yemen

To the ancients it was Arabia Felix, Fortunate Arabia. But that was already old news. The even more ancient Arab root for Yemen is ymn, or prosperity. This country is by turns peacefully green, lushly mountainous, rugged, vastly sandy, yet at every turn staggeringly beautiful. Yemen is one of those almost secret places we want to grab you by the lapels and lead you to.

Our expertly honed trips delve into the country’s hugely diverse scenery and put us in touch with its people (in a part of the world known for courtly hospitality, Yemenis are perhaps the most hospitable of all). We roam the narrow streets of Sana’a, the country’s 7,200-foot high capital, and explore its busy suqs, wafted by fabulously aromatic spices. We hike from village to village along ancient paths in Al-Mahwit, mountains that rise gracefully from the Red Sea. We head into the desert toward Marib (from where the Queen of Sheba controlled the southern end of the Frankincense Route) and make classic Arabian desert crossings to the oases of Seiyun, Tarim, and Shibam.
