Day Hikes in Ha Giang Province

Ha Giang Province, way up in Vietnam’s north, is a mountainous land of deep and undisturbed beauty. We stress undisturbed because there are areas in northern Vietnam that have become somewhat overburdened, shall we say, by visitors and knick-knackery. In Ha Giang we’ve found the kind of gorgeous landscapes and traditional ways of life that still make Vietnam such a marvelous destination.

We drive north from Hanoi into Ha Giang for some leisurely hiking in its emerald hills, wandering past crystal streams, through villages (and staying in a village home in Tay), before heading west to Lao Cai Province’s Sapa district, where we’ll get caught up in the bustling Sin Cheng minority market and relax with a couple of days at the superb Topas Ecolodge, a hostelry of great character set atop a vibrantly green hill, looking down steeply at the Sapa Valley.

Day 1: arrive in Hanoi • Day 2: drive to Ha Giang • Day 3: Dong Van • Days 4 & 5: Tay village homestay • Day 6: Bac Ha • Days 7 & 8: Topas Ecolodge • Day 9: en route to Hanoi via train • Day 10: arrive in Hanoi and depart for home.
