One of the world’s most fascinatingly multi-cultured countries, Suriname’s Dutch, Brazilians, Amerindians, Indians, Javanese, Creoles, and Chinese speak 17 officially recognized languages…this in a country two tenths of one percent the size of neighboring Brazil.
Parimaribo, Suriname’s capital, was chosen in 2002 as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, which praised its “new architectural idiom...a unique example of the contact between the European culture of the Netherlands and the indigenous cultures and environment of South America.” (Parimaribo also reflects the country’s diversity. Example: a mosque, synagogue, and Hindu temple peacefully adjacent to one another.) Beautiful in a dense, jungly way, Suriname’s fabulously isolated, culturally robust backcountry villages and serene river lodges are set, ti seems, almost completely outside of time.
