South Georgia Island
Shackleton Voyage to Antarctica and South Georgia
Almost a decade ago, GeoEx made the first commercial crossing of South Georgia Island, following the route pioneered, if that’s the word, by Ernest Shackleton and two companions in 1916. Shackleton’s desperate crossing of the island, a jagged, almost 10,000-foot mountain thrust up from the frigid Scotia Sea, was the culmination of one of the great survival epics of all time. (A story best told in Alfred Lansing’s classic Endurance and, more recently and somewhat more revealingly, in Roland Huntford’s authoritative biography, Shackleton.

We’re joyous at the prospect of returning to South Georgia aboard the modern, 100- guest Clelia II. Among the most joyous are GeoEx’s president Jim Sano, who co-led our 2000 crossing, and your writer, who is lobbying mightily to make this trip. This time Jim (and I, inshallah) will remain aboard while some of our travel mates cross the island. And while those hearties make the demanding crossing (under the leadership of ninetime Everest summiter Dave Hahn and Peter Hillary, vastly traveled son of the late Sir Edmund, and a fellow who has also stood atop the world’s apex), the rest of us will wend our way aboard the Clelia II, visiting ultra-remote coves and vast penguin colonies, pods of elephant seals, and flights of wandering albatross, getting a close look at this dramatically beautiful island, to the old whaling outpost of Stromness Bay, where we’ll reconnect with the crossing party, and continue on to the little town of Grytviken.

The voyage around South Georgia and the very optional crossing are just the centerpieces of a longer voyage that takes us to the bird-thronged South Orkneys and to the Antarctic Peninsula itself, which space considerations keep us from rhapsodizing about (though we give it a shot in An Explorer's Antarctica). But then again, if you’ve read this far, you’re probably enough of an adventure fan to give us a call for our detailed, rhapsodic itinerary for this magnificent outing.
