In the last thirty years Saudi Arabia has seen more change than any other country on earth. Perhaps we
will never see the like again. It has gone from a tribal nomadic desert country with black goatskin tents
and mud-brick houses to an ultra-modern land of gleaming towns and cities. The changes were all made
possible by the discovery of vast reserves of oil under the desert sand of the countrys eastern province.
But, it is probably safe to say that things might not have worked out the way they did had it not been for
the tall, charismatic and shrewd persona of the man who gave the country its name - Abdul-Aziz ibn
Saud. The country has, however, zealously guarded its conservative way of life founded on strict Islamic
principles. They have successfully adopted and adapted to what they needed from the Western culture
without sacrificing their traditions and the things they hold dear. Our trip will focus on this curious
juxtaposition of elements which combine to create a unique and beguiling country, and give us a fascinating
look at this ancient land.
