“That African Switzerland,” Negley Farson called Rwanda. At first blush, it might seem the famed foreign correspondent was getting a little carried away. But Switzerland and Rwanda, as dissimilar as they might appear, share a couple of important traits: both are peaceful (Rwanda only lately, to be sure), and both are home to some surpassingly beautiful landscapes, most especially of course, mountains. And while Rwanda’s Virunga Volcanoes lack the Alps’ snowy majesty, their fabulous jungle greenery put them in the same league (they’re generally not as skyscrapery as the Alps, but their highpoint, Mount Karisimbi is 95 feet higher than the 14,692-foot Matterhorn).
