“The mind,” Hedrick Smith wrote in The Russians, “is little equipped to comprehend a nation that encompasses eleven time zones.” Well, okay (and anyway, the Russians have lopped off a couple of time zones, leaving a mere 9). We can’t quite comprehend it, but we can and do very much appreciate it.
