Our private itineraries in Patagonia are heartfelt, as befits a region that long ago grabbed us and has never let go. Our leaders down there are old and dear friends, cultured, passionate men and women who, like Melville, are besotted by “all the attending marvels of a thousand Patagonian sights and sounds.”
Our private travelers hike in the astounding granite monoliths, forests, and shockingly blue lakes of the Torres del Paine and Los Glaciares National Park, world-unique mountain marvels. We range farther afield, to the remote and breathtakingly charming Estancia Cristina, for days of horseback and hiking to the Upsala Glacier . We arrange luxurious private itineraries, staying in superb hotels and estancias, flying by charter planes or driving in 4x4 vehicles, with serene day hikes and fabulous cuisine.
We begin our trip in Buenos Aires, a world class city of leafy neighborhoods, Parisian avenues, and divinely sumptuous hotels and restaurants. Then, we’re off for a couple of days of hiking and communing with the Torres del Paine, which words are ill equipped to describe (though we give it a shot under Into Patagonia). Bottom line: your writer, whose eyes have been fixed on the world’s mountains for 50 years, was overcome with joy by his visit to these symphonic peaks.
Then back to Calafate staying at the understatedly luxurious Eolo Lodge located in the Patagonian Steppes just outside of El Calafate. From here, we spend a day in the company of the mammoth Moreno Glacier, watching it slowly calve into Lago Argentino. The next day, onward by boat across Lago Argentino to Estancia Cristina, a famous old wilderness ranch found for us long ago by Patagonian sage Yvon Chouinard. Set against the lushly glaciated mountains of remotest Patagonia, isolated, unreachable by road, a wilderness within a wilderness, the Estancia is a remarkable destination, a glorious place to wander, fish, ride horses, and revel in views of the massive peaks guarding the Patagonian Ice Cap and the glaciers that rumble from them into the lake. Then back to Buenos Aires, or onward to explore more of the region with our Argentina & Chile extensions.
