A gem of a two-week trip, Luxury Lodges takes us from Buenos Aires to Chile’s Aysen region, remote and delightful. Our South American team has come up with some especially gracious, tranquil, and, indeed, luxurious lodges for us on this Patagonian exemplar.

We make our way from Bariloche to Lago Yungue Lodge for a couple of days of fishing, horsebacking, and glacier-walking (not many places on earth where all three are comfortably possible, based from such a comfortable lodge). Then to Bahia Mala Lodge, another stunner, where our private cabins—connected to the main lodge by charming wooden walkways—are warmed by wood-burning stoves. Bahia Mala is a seaside wonder, and we’ll weave in and out of its many islets, collecting shellfish (which the lodge’s chef will boil up for us in the evening), exploring, and kayaking into its deep fjords (with a chance to horseback up to Melimoyu Glacier for another exercise in contrasts, from sea to ice).

Note that we offer and recommend a nifty extension to the Torres del Paine, subject to much praise internationally and in our catalog.

Day 1: USA to Buenos Aires • Day 2: arrive in Buenos Aires, afternoon city tour • Day 3: fly to Bariloche • Day 4: day hike with champagne lunch • Day 5: morning kayaking on shores of Lake Gutierrez • Day 6: flight to Lago Yungue Lodge • Days 7 & 8: fish, horseback, walk on glacier near lodge • Day 9: fly to Bahia Mala Lodge • Day 10: boating • Days 11 & 12: Bahia Mala • Day 13: charter flight to Balmaceda, connect to Santiago de Chile and USA • Day 14: arrive in USA.

Optional Extension to Torres del Paine: Day 13: charter flight to Balmaceda and on to Punta Arenas, transfer to Explora Lodge in Torres del Paine National Park • Days 14–16: exploring the Torres • Day 17: return to Punta Arenas, fly to Santiago de Chile, and on to USA • Day 18: arrive in USA.
