Panama

For a country just 110 square miles larger than South Carolina, Panama packs in a lot of scenic and human charm. A lively, transcontinental nation, its geography ranges from superb seasides to rainforests, from jazzy Panama City to remote indigenous villages (not to mention the Canal, one of humanity’s masterworks, and a linchpin of the world economy).

Panama’s snorkeling and fishing are world-class, its lush jungles inviting to the adventuresome, its culture vibrant and colorful, and yet--and this is one of its outstanding charms--Panama is often overlooked, even by canny travelers. A shame, but an enjoyably correctable one.
