North Korea, Mass Games tours

The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) has been following its own path for more than 50 years. The nation is run on communist principles and dominated by the Juche ideology of self-reliance, with deification of political leaders often underlying the cultural tones. The DPRK is seldom open to American visitors; this year’s Mass Games will provide a rare opportunity to visit this enigmatic country.

Why GeoEx for North Korea travel?

A tradition of travel firsts. GeoEx has been a pioneer of travel for about thirty years, offering carefully orchestrated, eye-opening trips to long-sequestered places.

An extremely rare travel opportunity. GeoEx is one of the very few American tour operators to offer trips to the DPRK.

Leaders. Very few westerners, and even fewer Americans, have visited the DPRK, but our leader Sarah Timewell, who’s worked with GeoEx for 20 years, has been there several times. Note that the special Summer 2009 opportunity for travel to the DPRK might cause a shortage of experienced local guides, making it especially important to have English-speaking leaders who are knowledgeable and experienced in the country.

Guest Expert. Nick Bonner has been traveling to the DPRK since 1993 and produced three documentaries on the country. He’s also a collector of DPRK art and is currently co-curating DPRK artworks for the Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art.

A limited opening. The North Korean government is currently allowing Americans to visit during the Mass Games in Summer 2009, but this is a narrow window and it’s impossible to know the next time Americans will be permitted to visit. GeoEx is in the fortunate position of being able and ready to offer a departure.

Exclusive itinerary. We’ve handcrafted an itinerary that begins in Beijing and then continues to Pyongyang, capital of the DPRK and site of the Mass Games. We’ll round things off with the border cities of Kaesong and Panmunjom and the Demilitarized Zone.
