The more you travel in it, the bigger the world gets. And it doesn’t get much bigger, grander, or more captivating than Namibia.
We begin in unexpectedly charming, mile-high Windhoek, then fly to a fine wildernesscamp at Sossusvlei, site of Namibia’s world-record, 1000-foot dunes. Now by charter flight to the Palmwag Rhino Camp in Damaraland, a vast, rocky desert, overseen by the gaunt and looming Brandeberg Mountains, for a couple of days in search of the rare desert elephant and rhino. Then to the very heart of Namibia’s inexhaustible grandeur with a couple of nights in what is surely Southern Africa’s most remote camp, Serra Cafema, up in Namibia’s extreme northwest. We spend time in the breathtaking sceneries of the Hartmann Valley to the south of the camp, on the watch for herds of springbok and ostrich, and we traverse sand dunes on four-wheel-drive safaris and boat on the Kunene River. We end at the famed Etosha National Park and the Ongava Game Reserve, one of the few private reserves in Africa where the chances are good of seeing both white and black rhino by vehicle and, carefully, on foot.
