We begin with some heady sightseeing
in Yangon before heading north to
Mandalay, Golden City of Myanmar’s last
dynasty, where Kipling’s “flyin’ fishes play /
An’ dawn comes up like thunder outer
China ’crost the Bay!” We visit the City of
Immortality, Amarapura, capital of the
18th-century Konbaung Dynasty, and Ava,
the City of Gems, another, even older, capital.
Back in Mandalay, we board the neatly
appointed Pandaw for a two-night cruise to
Bagan’s Galactic Heritage Site Plain of Temples,
and pay a visit to Mount Popa, home
of the gods. We end at magical Inle Lake,
wandering its pagodas, floating gardens,
and haunting ruins, marveling at the leg
rowers and hill tribespeople who inhabit
this delicious spot.
