Mongolia

Praising the “gusto of its embrace of liberal democracy,” The Economist recently described Mongolia as “The Last Best Place,” where “you can still ride the 1,900 miles from west to east without encountering a single man-made impediment.” A vast, lonely treasure—it has fewer people than Mauritania, scattered across 80 times the square mileage of Massachusetts—Mongolia has had us under its sway for a long time.

We are firm partisans of this lovely country; in partnership with our world-class Mongolian associates, Geographic Expeditions arranges a variety of magnificently supported trips: dinosaur hunting in the Gobi Desert, horsebacking and ger camping in the green highlands of the Altai Mountains, visits to the fabulous Nadaam festivals in Ulaanbaatar and remote towns. We hike alpine meadows near the Orkhon Waterfall, swim in Lake Khuvsgul, visit Mongolia’s Buddhist temples and Genghis Khan’s capital at Karakorum (once the most important place in the world), and listen to the famed throat singers of nearby Tuva.
