camel in Great Gobi Protected Area

This remote and exploratory journey takes us deep into the heart of the Gobi Desert (if you’re like us, just reading those eight words, deep into the heart of the Gobi Desert, is enough to rev up your pulse dramatically). We visit little-known—and less-visited—regions, poking around for dinosaur bones in Buugin Tsav, dallying with nomadic families in their remote ger encampments, and gazing at Bronze Age rock engravings in the Bichigt Valley. We’ll spend time exploring—aboard two-humped Bactrian camels—the largest sand dunes in Mongolia, the Khongoriin Els (Singing Sand Dunes), and we’ll spend a leisurely and enthralled day roaming around the ethereal red sandstone canyons of Khermen Tsav.

We end with a visit to the sublime Yol Valley of the Gurvan Saikhan Mountains (part of the vast Altai range), where majestic lammergeyers (Gypaetus barbatus or “bearded vulture-eagles”) often waft above the canyon. This is GeoEx’s most comprehensive exploration of the Gobi. It’s a spectacular journey, ideal for those whose pulses remain steady at the thought of roughing it a bit.
