Kyrgyzstan, Tash Rabat Valley. Shepherd’s summer camp.

Easternmost of the former Soviet Central Asian republics, Kyrgystan enjoys a reputation as the “Switzerland of Central Asia.” More than 80% of this landlocked nation is comprised of the stunning mountain terrain of the Tien Shan, or Mountains of Heaven, which reach a highpoint in the world’s northernmost 7,000-meter peak, 22,998-foot Jengish Chokusu (Pik Pobeda in Soviet days). A crossroads of trade and conquest, Kyrgystan combines world-class landscapes with a rich and compelling history.

What was the known as Kirgizia was assimilated into the Russian Empire in the 1870s, as the Great Game for dominance in Central Asia between Russia and Britain was heating up. But the country’s strategic location, especially the lush Fergana Valley, is ancient. Marco Polo passed through here on his way to China, and long before that, the Chinese spent massive amounts of energy, money, and lives trying to rustle the horses of Ferghana, famed for their nimbleness and strength.
