Our meticulously crafted Essence of a Continent is a grand introduction to Africa’s golden joys, taking us off the too-trod path to some of the country’s finest and vastest wildlife reserves. We begin in the south, flying from Nairobi to Hemingway’s Green Hills of Africa, the Chyulu, for three nights at the incomparable Campi ya Kanzi, gazing out at nearby Kilimanjaro as we game view and hike in the hills’ cloud forest. (Your writer, like most who have experienced it, ranks ya Kanzi at the very top of his list of African treasures.)

We fly from ya Kanzi to the Masai Mara and the lovely Leleshwa Camp, one of East Africa’s finest permanent tented camps, for another experience of the country’s essence; we’ll peacefully track game with our Maasai guides (getting to know these amazing folk) and enjoy sundowners in camp, listening for the roar of lions in the bush. Then north to the Northern Frontier District’s 61,000-acre Loisaba Wilderness, where we spend one night in the Loisaba Lodge and another on wooden platforms (each equipped with camp shower and toilets) called Star Beds because they allow us to roll our beds out from the covered platforms and sleep under the equatorial night sky—a natural extravaganza of the highest order. We end with a leisurely three days in the Lewa Wilderness Area, an extraordinarily wildlife-rich conservancy in the shadow of Mount Kenya.
