Our meticulously crafted Essence of a Continent is a grand introduction to Africa’s golden joys, taking us off the tootrod path to some of the country’s finest and vastest wildlife reserves. We begin in the south, flying from Nairobi to Hemingway’s Green Hills of Africa, the Chyulu, for three nights at the incomparable Campi ya Kanzi, gazing out at nearby Kilimanjaro as we game view and hike in the hills’ cloud forest. (Your writer, like most who have experienced it, ranks ya Kanzi at the very top of his list of African treasures.) We fly northeast to Sabuk, an entrancing haven on the edge of the Laikipia Plateau, overlooking the Ewaso Nyiro River and the plains of Laikipia rolling out to Mount Kenya. Then to the Samburu homeland and Loisaba Lodge, a 61,000-acre private wilderness rich with wildlife. Our Saruni Tented Lodge, close to the confluence of the hippo- and crocodilethronged Mara and Talek Rivers, set in the heart of the famed Masai Mara, is another experience of the country’s essence; we’ll peacefully track game with our Maasai guides (getting to know these amazing folk) and enjoy sundowners in camp, listening for the roar of lions in the bush. Each of our Essence of a Continent lodges and camps hosts no more than 14 guests, giving us a high level of personal attention, professional leadership, fine cuisine, and a rare, uncrowded safari experience.

(As for Kenya’s political situation: We’re in constant contact with our associates, of course, but things have settled down almost entirely. In any case, the places we frequent in Kenya were never part of the recent tumult.)
