This innovative trip takes us into untouristed rural Rajasthan, where we’ll
do some easy hiking, pay visits to remote temples and villages, and make
the acquaintance of the people of the hamlets of Delwara, Narlai, and Nimaj.
Unfamiliar names, perhaps, but all the more reason to break out of the rutted
paths for a cultural eye-opening.
After good looks at not-so-rural Delhi, Agra and the Taj, and Jaipur, we head into the countryside and the village of Delwara. From our luxurious hotel we’ll explore the village and nearby Udaipur, the City of Sunrise. Then it’s to Kumbalgarh, amid the stunning Aravalli Hills, where we’ll walk up to the old, massive fort and then hike (mostly downhill) through the Kumbalgarh Sanctuary to Narlai, an ancient village dominated by a 300-foot rock dotted with marble temples and shrines. Then to the charming village of Nimaj, where our home for the next two nights sits on a tranquil 100-year-old dam, overlooking a lake with spectacular sunsets, sunrises, and views of the surrounding countryside. The Seervi tribal people have lived off the desert here for centuries. We’ll spend a day communing with them, visiting their villages and learning about their traditional crafts. We round out this deep look into Rajasthan by driving to Jodhpur, famed for its fort and blue-walled houses, then fly south to Aurangabad, where we’ll delve into the famed Ajanta and Ellora Caves, both World Heritage Sites. We end in the warm bustle of Mumbai (which some of us still think of as Bombay).
