Uttaranchal, India’s youngest state, is nestled into the heart of the western Himalaya and bordered by Tibet and Nepal to the east. Our journey takes us to the blissfully unexplored Kumaon region: home to some of India’s most stunning topography, from the rugged snow-capped peaks of the Great Himalaya range, to rushing rivers that flow towards the sacred Ganges, thickly wooded cedar, pine and rhododendron forests, and impossibly green valleys blanketed in rice and wheat terraces. Ancient temples built by the prolific Katyuri and Chand dynasties punctuate the landscape. Kumaon’s physical beauty is equally matched by the charm and allure of its culturally and linguistically unique inhabitants.
In Village to Village in Kumaon, we will embark on pleasant and invigorating three to five hour walks each day, traversing the terraced foothills, farmlands and forests of Kumaon, arriving in a different village each afternoon. The village homestays reward us with the ability to meaningfully interact with our hospitable hosts and neighbors, immersing ourselves in the Kumaoni way of life. The Kumaoni people are steeped in rich traditions and colorful folklore, a unique confluence of cultures that dominated the surrounding regions. Festivals and celebrations perennially abound from the most remote villages to the bustling cities. In the evenings we will relax at our beautifully renovated village homes, where we will sip sundowners by a roaring fire and feast on home cooked meals under the stars. The trip culminates at 360° Leti, an exclusive four-villa luxury lodge situated on a secluded mountain spur at 8,000 feet with awe-inspiring views of the Great Himalayan range.
