Wild India takes us deep into central India’s primal jungles and forests in search of the rare, elusive, and exquisite Royal Bengal tiger, Panthera tigris tigris (“If there is a more perfect creature,” Lazlo Mecir wrote, “it exists in pure, fevered imagination”). We’ll go backstage in some of the country’s most important wildlife conservation projects and meet with its leading researchers and naturalists.
Our journey takes us into the heart of India, Madhya Pradesh, the “Tiger State,” to three major national parks—Panna, Bhandhavgarh, and Kanha—that have been stalwart protectors of the endangered mega-beasts (and other less celebrated, but quite worthy animals such as wolves, bears, panthers, antelopes, and a fine cast of snakes and crocodilians). And in addition to daily, astutely led game drives, we’ll carve out time to explore ancient forts and small villages, getting a feel for India’s fascinating rural life, and, on Day 3, we’ll get a look at the magnificent temples of Khajuraho, famed for their erotic carvings, or mithuna.
Accommodations on Wild India include the blissfully elegant safari lodges Pashan Garh (Panna), Mahua Kothi (Bhandhavgarh), and Banjaar Tola (Kanha), all built with a unique and comely mix of Indian and African architecture, and all very gracious and luxurious.
