Its no wonder Ladakh is known as Little Tibet: theres no mistaking the infinite landscape of the Tibetan Plateau or the colorful festival masks of the predominantly Tibetan Buddhist culture. The "roof of the world" holds an immense and rich treasure trove: colorful gompas rooted in the rocky slopes, villages surrounded by snow-capped peaks and lush green orchards, bazaars whose mosaic of languages and cultures take on a melody all their own. To amble the streets and paths of such a place and contemplate its concurrent austerity and warmth is to experience what writer Andrew Harvey called the peaceful life.
We begin in the pulsating city of Delhi, a metropolis rich with the legacies of sovereign powers that have risen and fallen throughout the ages. Well enjoy some of its magnificent monuments before flying to Leh, an important pilgrimage destination for Tibetan Buddhists all over the world. From Leh we journey out across the Indus Valley, where we stay in comfortable village homes that have been tastefully and luxuriously appointed, and that Travel + Leisure Magazine calls a cut above any other guesthouse in the region. Traveling between these rural villages reveals an India less visited, and more importantly, Indian life at its most fascinating and affecting.
Optional Shayok River & Nubra Valley Extension: Continue onward into the Nubra Valley, flanked by the mighty Karakoram and bursting with color from verdant forests, fields of lavender, and orchards of walnut and apricot. The most striking feature of this remote valley is its long stretch of sweeping white sand dunes, though it also boasts a resident population of double-humped Bactrian camels that remind us of the ancient Silk Road trading route that once dominated the region.
