Guyana

The lucky 1 in every 3,257,000 international travelers who finds her or his way to Guyana encounters a marvelous, and marvelously intact natural masterpiece. This small, welcoming, richly varied nation, the only English-speaking country in South America, is far below the TouristWorld radar, which, as far as we’re concerned, is a fine reason to pay it a visit.

Guyana is home to one of the world’s largest undisturbed rainforests (its UN envoys regularly tell their colleagues that Guyana should charge the rest of the world for supplying it with so much clean air). Its Kaieteur Falls--five times higher than Niagara--is a roaring, authentic world wonder, its roster of wildlife is fascinating (manatees, rare black caimans, jaguars, giant river otters, tapirs, giant anteaters, and harpy eagles--all featured in an elegiac three-part 2008 BBC program called Lost Land of the Jaguar). And, to top it all off, Guyana’s people are justly proud and eager to share their country with its small, but canny cohort of visitors.
