Cambodia

A country of almost unsettling loveliness, Cambodia rarely fails to enthrall its visitors. Its famed temples are especially inspiring. As Rose Macauley wrote in Pleasures of Ruins, “All is fantastic and ambushed with ghosts; the erroneous opinions of archaeologists twitter among them like bats.”

The architectural treasures at Angkor have tantalized Western travelers since 1858 when Henri Mouhot, a French naturalist, stumbled upon it in the jungle, and it became famous as the Lost City of Asia. We leisurely explore the ancient city’s bedazzling temples, gates, and stone carvings, quietly getting a feel for what writer Crosbie Garstin meant when he said that Angkor ”calls you silently, irresistibly, day and night.” And we roam the stunning Bayon Temple and Banteay Srei, the Citadel of Women—a tiny, enchanting temple, and one of the jewels of this remarkable place.
