Brilliantly succinct, but far-ranging in its delights, this trip gives us a good
and madly scenic look at Vietnam and the great traveler’s plum of Angkor.
We begin in forever busy, engaging Saigon (or, if you like, Ho Chi Minh City) before flying to the white beaches and cultural treasure-house of Hoi An. Then north to Hue, old Vietnam’s cultural capital, set tranquilly by the Perfume River. And farther north to a couple of nights in Hanoi and a look at the jaw-droppingly dramatic limestone monoliths of Halong Bay, one of those places that are happily inerasable from the memory card.
Now south, flying over the endless green expanse of Southeast Asia to Phnom Penh, and then on to Siem Reap and what Arnold Toynbee called “the epic poem” of Angkor. “Like the Odyssey and like Paradise Lost,” he wrote, Angkor “makes its effect by the grandeur of its structure as well as the beauty of its details.”
We’ve constructed Vietnam and the Epic Poem of Angkor with more than scenery-soaking in mind; our eye is also on Vietnam’s and Cambodia’s cultures and peoples, and we’ve inserted some creative whistles and a few sweet bells in our itinerary. Note, too, that we have a handy, five-day Classic Journey to Laos for those who’d like to visit that country’s lovely little capital, Vientiane, and the still unscratched gem of Luang Prabang.
