One of humanity’s greatest architectural achievements (or, better yet, one of its greatest achievements, period), Angkor has tantalized Western travelers since 1858, when Henri Mouhat, a French naturalist, stumbled upon it in the jungle, and it became famous as the Lost City of Asia. This short trip, ideal as an extension or prelude to any Southeast Asian journey, is designed to give us a good and comprehensive look at the ruins, which, Crosbie Garstin wrote, “call you silently, irresistibly, day and night.” And as Rose Macaulay wrote in her great Pleasures of Ruins, “All is now fantastic and ambushed with ghosts; the erroneous opinions of archeologists twitter among the ruins like bats.”
Day 1: arrive in Siem Reap • Days 2 & 3: Angkor • Day 4: depart Siem Reap.
