Elephants travel to Botswana, Moremi Game Reserve drinking pool

We imagine that all great rivers debouch merrily into the sea. But what happens when a river—in this case, the vigorous Okavango—is frustrated in its natural desire? In Africa’s Last Eden, the great photographer Frans Lanting tells us. “The Okavango’s very existence in the middle of the Kalahari is nothing short of miraculous,” Lanting writes of the 5,700-square-mile wonderland-oasis created by the seeping of the river into the desert. “The very notion that a place as wild and untouched as the Okavango even exists may seem like a dream.”

GeoEx's Africa team created this succinct but inclusive safari with ample time to savor the Delta’s subtle and spectacular sceneries, from shady, pacific lagoons and meandering waterways and riverine forests to some of Africa’s finest game viewing. They send us to delightful and very wisely chosen camps, exemplars of the joys of safariing in Africa. And they’ve scheduled their six Group Departure dates to coincide with three particularly apt seasons to explore the Delta and its environs.

In green season (April, May, and November), we’ll pay close attention to the Kalahari, which is in top form, bursting with new life. We’ll drive into the well-named Deception Valley and walk with a shaman of the San bushmen, learning about ancient tracking, hunting, and gathering ways. In high season (July, August, and September) — a very “productive” time of year, as our guides say—we’ll spend time at Discoverer Camp in the Linyanti, north of the Delta, with canoe trips and the chance to see swimming elephants; and we have special access to the Khwai Discoverer Camp in the remote reaches of Moremi National Park. (All these seasonal variations include quality time in the heart of the Delta, of course.)

Please Note: Departure dates listed above include optional 2-day Victoria Falls trip extension.
