Australia

Friendly and famously easygoing, Australia is blessed with a bracing mix of the exotic and the gorgeous. Mark Twain, in More Tramps Abroad, summed up this continent packed into a single country: “Australia is full of surprises and adventures, and incongruities and incredulities.”

Our travelers sup on a hearty stew of Outback adventure and close-ups with nature’s incredulities, all served up with great dollops of down-under hospitality and, perhaps, washed down with goblets of Australia’s alluring (and justly famous) wines (not to mention its trademark beers). Tramping through Australia’s wildest wildernesses, we awake to a chorus of kookaburras and kites, the Outback’s traditional alarm clock. We trek through the bush of Kangaroo Island in peaceful pursuit of wallabies and kangaroos. Near the cliffy shores of the Great Australian Bight, we swim with dolphins and sea lions, and from the cliffs above we watch as southern right whales and their calves frolic below. And if we’re feeling peckish from a day’s adventures, a mouth-watering barbeque awaits at an Outback sheep station, deep in the massive solitude of southern Australia.
