Argentina

From cosmopolitan Buenos Aires, across sweeping pampas and soaring peaks, to far-flung Tierra del Fuego, Argentina offers travelers experiences that are by turns elegantly urbane, enthrallingly beautiful, and supremely wild and rugged (and sensually melancholy. Let’s not forget the country’s great dance, the tango).

Our travelers to Argentine Patagonia relax at a secluded estancia in a paradisal setting on the shores of Viedma Lake, where the Pampas meet the Andes. These are the haunting lands that took “firm possession” of Darwin’s mind, filling him with “deep, but ill-defined sensations.” The views are rich, and so is the animal life, which includes condors, foxes, pumas, eagles, geese, ibis, and falcons. We hike in and around Fitz Roy, where the Andes explode upward into one of the world’s most spectacular mountain clusters. More languorously, we wend through Patagonia’s Lake District, with its dazzlingly azure waters and emerald forests. And some savor the beauty of the near-polar Land of Fire while ensconced in a snug estancia near Ushuaia, the world’s southernmost city.
